"My personal goal and our goal with WhizKids is to motivate young women so that they attain their maximum potential, gain confidence and persevere," says Erika Ebbel, MIT grad and former Miss Massachusetts.
After reading several articles describing declining student interest and performance in math and the sciences, Erika started the WhizKids Foundation in 2002 to reverse the trend. Based on the premise that these subjects are best understood when applied to things kids can relate to, the WhizKids approach connects math, science, technology and engineering to music, art, politics, and entertainment.
The program, which includes hands-on lab work and field trips helmed by a diverse staff, has quickly sparked the interest of school administrators and students alike. The WhizKids' curriculum has spread to over 50 schools in Massachusetts, California, and Florida with over 1500 students benefiting from it. That's why Erika is a 2006 Winner of the Women Of Worth Award Program.
