Inspiring Heroes

My father inspired me to volunteer. He was a graduate of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. I saw him give of his time and medical expertise as a caring, small-town doctor in a rural area. He met the needs he saw – people of color in need of medical attention. My father did this without financial support from the community – because they were not able to. He delivered babies in a small town and received payment of produce, canned vegetables and hogs. He did not refuse service to anyone, and this meant a lot to me. I saw him live a lifestyle of service, so I, too am serving my community. I promised my father I would continue his legacy of service before he passed away.
