Millicent Hill
67 - Los Angeles, CA
|
Tapping into her skills as a former teacher, Millicent Hill established Mama Hills' Help, an after-school organization to provide tutoring and a safe haven for at-risk children in South Los Angeles. Many of these children shoulder tremendous family burdens which stifle their ability to learn: They are victims of violence, come from single-parent households, live in poverty, have incarcerated or deceased parents, or have family members battling drug dependency.
In order to help the children address these issues, Mama Hill expanded the organization's programming to provide the academic, emotional, and spiritual support they desperately need. Today, the program focuses on gang intervention and prevention, counseling, teen pregnancy prevention, as well as tutoring and homework assistance. Functioning as the organization's executive director, Mama Hill is all things to the organization. She counsels students and parents, tutors in various subjects, leads field trips, coordinates special events, and works on fundraising activities.
Over 125 students and their families are annually served by Mama Hill's Help. Young people doing it the Mama Hill way are attentive and eager learners, and receive higher test scores and grades. Since the program's inception in 2000, she has helped hundreds of youth escape the violence of the streets. Locals in South Los Angeles look out for Mama Hill and her students, and most in the neighborhood recognize her house as a "safe haven" from gang activity.
That's why Millicent is a 2007
Woman Of Worth. |
