Pauline Lewis
69 - Phoenix, AZ
Pauline Lewis founded the Phoenix Foundation for Homeless Children in 1988.
Previously, Ms. Lewis was a Missionary President in her church, the First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix, AZ. As a person who was raised to help others, Ms. Lewis awoke one day with an inspiration to focus on the homeless. Following a Sunday morning service, Ms. Lewis decided to leave her seat in the Church and to take a stand in the community.

When Ms. Lewis took those steps into the community 19 years ago, she was struck by the plight of the thousands of children living on the streets. It was horribly clear to her that those who suffer the most in this prison of poverty are the children. Their helplessness gave her the resolve to persuade others to join her cause.

And so, for the past 19 years Ms. Lewis has dedicated her life to providing relief, compassion, and hope to homeless children and their families. She has done so with the assistance of thousands of wonderful volunteers along the way, who have joined her in the service of those desperately in need of help; joining her in bringing hope and a sense of dignity to the lost and abandoned living on our streets.

The words written on the cover of the Foundation’s first brochure serve best to sum up the work of Ms. Lewis and her volunteers. They read “WE CARE. WE HELP.” The Foundation works in collaboration with numerous other organizations to provide relief directly to homeless men, women, and children. It is the dream of the Foundation to get these children and their parents off of the streets and into a world where they can lead rewarding, productive lives. That's why Pauline is a 2007 Woman Of Worth.
